In the center of Lake Como, on the promontory overlooking Varenna, for more than a thousand years, stands the Castello di Vezio, where, in a setting of unparalleled natural beauty, history, art, nature, and the culture of the area blend together in perfect harmony.
One of the special features of this castle is that for some years it has hosted a center for the care and training of birds of prey, which allows visitors to learn about and appreciate the ancient art of falconry. The training sessions are usually held 5/6 times a week, always weather permitting, in the Castle garden, so that visitors can take photographs, see the various specimens up close, and be entertained by the falconer with explanations about the history of falconry, its modern use, the biology, and the training of birds of prey.
From the top of the main tower and from the garden you can enjoy a wide view of the lake, particularly striking on the clearest days. Since it is perched above Varenna, it allows you to see Lake Como in all its splendor.
Descending the staircase that starts from the main terrace, we arrive in the underground rooms, which formed an outpost of the Cadorna defensive line, ready to counter a possible German attack coming from the Menaggio area.
The origins of the castle date back to the late Roman period, legend has it that it was Queen Theodolinda who wanted the castle built, but other Lombard locations can also claim this tradition. The first documents attesting to the existence of the fortification date back to 1368; it is believed that the servants employed by the castle lived in the village of Vezio, but these hypotheses have yet to be verified.
Inside the manor, we find what is in all likelihood the northernmost olive grove in the world, from which a D.O.P. olive oil of considerable value is produced.
Another peculiarity of the Castello di Vezio is the legend of the ghost of Queen Theodolinda, which tells of the specter wandering the corridors of the castle or the gardens on moonless nights, and the managers evoke the story with figures made of plaster and papier-mâché.
Among the various other curiosities stands out the fossil of the Lariosaurus: a reptile that lived in brackish water areas, about one meter long, belonging to an extinct aquatic category.
