Sighignola is an imposing mountain that rises about 1300 m above sea level, belonging to the Luganese Prealps mountain range and marking the border between Italy and Switzerland.
The main attraction of this natural giant is the panoramic terrace located right on the border line (but included in Italian territory) which has earned the name "Balcone d’Italia".
This enchanting place overlooks Lugano directly and offers visitors a breathtaking panoramic view that embraces both the city center and the lake of the Swiss capital, all while being surrounded by the pre-Alpine natural environment.
The beauty and charm of this panoramic terrace have earned it a permanent place among the most beautiful places in Italy according to the FAI (Italian Environmental Fund). The evocative terrace seems set among the rocks and is often chosen as a special location for shows, sporting events, conferences, and events.
The Swiss side is decidedly rugged and steep and features a drop of almost 1000 meters that leads directly to Lake Lugano, while the Italian side does not differ much from the plain and is gentle and wooded.
Getting there is simple and above all the trip is worth it: the postcard scenery remains in the eyes and hearts of tourists.
It is a destination suitable for everyone, for families with children, for couples seeking romance, for singles wanting to relax, for those who love to enjoy the landscape by motorbike, and for cycling enthusiasts.
The Balcone d’Italia is located in Lanzo d’Intelvi, and can be reached by two roads starting from Gravedona. My advice is to take the one that runs along the lake to Argegno on the way there, and go through the hinterland on the way back, or vice versa, also considering the times you want to go, since the road along the Lario is usually busier.
